Cooperative learning is an educational approach which aims to organize classroom activities and teaching students there social skills. Having cooperative learning daily in a classroom does increase a child social skills and keeps the class in a daily routine too. These learning strategies are used in classrooms for every type of a student.
As said in the video above there are five elements that need to be used to make cooperative learning more successful. The first one is positive interdependence is making sure every student knows they can not succeed unless everyone in the groups succeed. Second is, face to face interaction meaning using there social skills to collaborate with one another. Next we have individual accountability where you assign every group member to be responsible for an assignment. The fourth element is interpersonal and small group skills students need to listen to their peers and use there social skills to make the assignment work. Lastly, the group processing skill is making sure students understand what they can do to work together more and have them understand what they have learn as a group.
It has been studied by Colorin Colorado website that students that are English Language Learners (ELLs) because it does promote learning, respect and friendship. This is also for students who are at a normal learning level too. You promote learning by making sure each student does help out one another and while a student is helping out the other they are reviewing what you as the teacher have thought Respect is promoted by teaching student how to be good listener, giving others a turn and showing friendship is by telling students to kind to one another in the group, making sure everyone is on the same page. Also, the ELL students do learn from with small groups learning it gives them confidence as they are in a group with only a few peers. It enhances there vocabulary as they observe other students. And since there is rotation id does give them that time to learn all the centers and observe different directions in a classroom with other students doing it first. It also helps out the teacher if students are doing cooperative learning because it easier to come around and help students more on one on one. Some students do need the extra one and one, So, if they are in groups than the teacher can make the extra help to be successful. flickr

These learning groups can be from 2-4 students it shouldn't be more than four because students will become distracted and go off the directions that they are given. While doing these centers there has to be some rules that teachers do need to accomplish to make cooperative learning more effect full. They are :
Contribute
Stay on task
Help each other
Encourage each other
Share
Solve problems
Accept feed back from students
These rules should be enforced everyday as you do cooperative learning. Before they go in there groups as a teacher you should repeat these rules to make your centers easier.
Every subject can have learning center areas. During math kids can work independently on worksheets and then discuss or do an actual hands on activity for everyone can learn. During reading the class can all read have them summarized a story. Learning centers can be a very positive way of teaching kids. As a teacher just need to make sure that they are following the skills of social and be organized and making sure that they are following the rules. If these rules are not followed all you are just looking for madness to begin because students will get bored and go off topic especially the little ones.
To conclude cooperative learning should be used by every teacher. It does teach skills to be more social and to learn from others. It helps students that need that extra help from the teacher and it make students understand to help one another. It teaches students all the major rules for cooperative learning sharing, helping, staying on task. The rule of staying on task is much easier when you have centers in the classroom because students are only focusing on one thing at a time. And as you rotate the students do not feel overwhelm with themselves.
As you teach kids the importance why it great to be working together in groups there also has to me be some strategies to help students learn the content in an educational way. Here are some examples:
1. Round Robin
Presenting a category and having students
take turns so they can go around the
group naming items that can fit in this category
2. Round Table
Present a category with the beginning of a letter in
the alphabet and make students go around and write
one word with same letter
3. Write Around
This is great for summarizing. Give students a
sentence starter and have them finish it. After, have
every student read their sentences and make story
4. Number Headed
Together
Give a number to each student, have a time limit ask
them a question. Then have all the same number stand up
and have them answer the questions and discuss
5. Team Jigsaw
Have each student read a part of a text and then discuss with a partner
6. Tea Party
Have Students form a line and discuss a content they have read and take turn
with different group members and review.
